Updates from the LOBSTER IST project... (apologies to those who receive this message more than once)
* A beta version of MAPI 2.0 is now available for download. MAPI, or Monitoring API, is a multi-user programming interface designed to simplify the development of network monitoring software by making it device independent. It is currently able to run with a variety of hardware, including DAG cards, the COMBO range of adapters, and standard NIC cards, but can easily be modified to run with other hardware. More information can be found at http://mapi.uninett.no/
* FORTH has released AnonTool, an open-source Anonymisation API. This provides an easy to use and flexible set of functions for network traffic anonymization; either operating on live traffic or on captured packet traces in the tcpdump format. AnonTool currently supports selective anonymization for the IP, TCP/UDP, HTTP, FTP, Netflow v5 and v9 range of protocols, and includes a set of ready-to-use applications. More information can be found at http://www.ics.forth.gr/dcs/Activities/Projects/anontool.html
* VU has released Ruler which is a program to generate highly-efficient data rewriting systems. It was originally designed to filter and anonymize network packets, but it has a much broader range of applications. More information can be found at https://gforge.cs.vu.nl/projects/ruler/.
* The latest Stager release is 2.0.1. This is a system for aggregating and presenting network statistics, and although tailored for using NetFlow data, it is generic and can be customized to present and process any kind of network statistics. The back-end collects data with flow-tools, and stores reports in a database before automatically producing daily, weekly and/or monthly statistics. A web front-end can present data as tables, matrices, or plots, with fully customisable reports. More information can be found at http://software.uninett.no/stager/
* TNO and SURFnet have developed NERD, the Network Emergency Responder and Detector. This is a security monitoring tool that collects and processes NetFlow data in order to detect and warn of denial-of-service (Dos) attacks on a network. NERD also can search through collected NetFlow data to analyze attacks and/or traffic behaviour. More information can be found at http://www.nerdd.org/
* Uninett develops MoNArch network visualisation tool utilising Google maps. See http://drift.uninett.no/kart/monarch/
* CESNET produces ABW passive bandwidth usage monitoring application for that runs on DiMAPI. This was developed in conjunction with the GN2-JRA1 activity, and allows bandwidth to be distinguished by protocol at different layers with a fine granularity. More information can be found at https://perfmon.cesnet.cz/abw-intro.html
* The 2nd Workshop on Large-Scale Monitoring of Broadband Internet Infrastructures was held on 16 May 2006 in Catania, Italy. This showed how passive monitoring can be utilised on multi-gigabit links, outlined anonymisation techniques, and demonstrated the new applications developed for characterising traffic. It also looked more widely at the challenges of high-speed passive monitoring, and the research possibilities in this area. The proceedings are available on the LOBSTER website at http://www.ist-lobster.org/events/workshop-2006/
About LOBSTER - An IST project that aims to develop a pilot European Infrastructure for accurate Internet traffic monitoring. Based on passive monitoring at speeds of up to 10 Gbps, it aims to improve understanding of the Internet and help solve difficult performance and security problems.
