Taking stock of LOBSTER
More than 400,000 Internet attacks have been detected by LOBSTER
since the European traffic monitoring project began in October 2004.
The pilot project, which is due to end in June this year, deployed 36
passive monitoring sensors in nine different countries, in a step
towards an advanced European infrastructure that will improve our
understanding of the Internet and help solve performance and security
problems.
The sensors, operating at up to gigabit speeds, are together able to
monitor traffic across 2.3 million IP addresses at any one time,
using four applications developed during the project.
The LOBSTER infrastructure is unique in Europe and one of only three
similar infrastructures that exist in the world today.
The project is comprised of nine partners including NRENs, research
organizations and commercial partners.
